Etelä-Karjala, Savitaipale

The museum is situated in the village of Savitaipale on the verdant Hakamäki Hill with impressive views to Lake Kuolimo.

Traditionally, the courtyard is a popular venue for functions and celebrations organised by the local people. At Midsummer in particular the villagers gather here to watch the burning of the magnificent Midsummer bonfire.

The Hakamäki House Museum has a small gift shop where you can buy, amongst other things, an interesting piece of Europaeus jewellery or informative publications.

The museum park is set in a rural milieu. In addition to the main building, the courtyard is flanked by granaries and storehouses, a windmill, a smoke sauna, a kiln, a barn and a foot soldier’s croft. The museum buildings house a collection of textiles and objects representing the region’s popular tradition. The museum also hosts various temporary exhibitions and enjoys close links with the local schools.

Constructed in the traditional South Karelian farmhouse style, the large central room of Hakamäki House originates from the village of Survaja and boasts a splendid baking oven, which is surrounded by an impressive collection of various everyday objects indispensable to rural life. In the bedroom you can admire textiles originating from Savitaipale.

The courtyard is flanked by an impressive row of granaries and storehouses. The windmill represents a so-called ‘foot mill’ which means that it was easy to turn in the direction of the wind. In addition to the traditional sauna paraphernalia, the smoke sauna also features objects relating to flax processing, such as a flax brake.

One of the most fascinating buildings set in the courtyard is the foot soldier’s croft. The exhibition staged in the croft gives a rare insight into the modest home of a foot soldier serving in the army of the kingdom of Sweden-Finland and his everyday life during a period when war could break out at any time. In the kiln, also set in the courtyard, the visitor can see the straw, ready to be threshed.
